Sc’Additions

Partnered with Scott Traditions, a dining hall at Ohio State, this 4 week full class project sought to create interventions to improve the experience of students at the largest dinning hall on campus through wayfinding, a new space, and nutrient app.

Location of interest for addition and first sketch

Concept One: Play Patio

Inspired by bar patios, the goal and direction of this concept is to focus on making a space ideal for guests to interact with other guests through games. This will be done by having a game centered layout with standing tables, outdoor games, and having a energizing and fun environment.

After presenting our concepts to Scott’s manager and an engineering professor, they recommended moving forward with this idea.

Inspired by 1970s conversation pits, the goal and direction of this concept is to focus on making a space ideal for guests to meet new people and converse with other students. This can be done by the layout of the space, having conversation cards, and having a comfortable and inviting environment.

Concept Two: Convo Pit

Quick 3d Model and sketch of the location

To the right is what currently exists and to the left is our proposed addition.

Would involve:

  • Turning the emergency exit door into a functional door for use

  • Adding two over-head garage doors

Specs

  • 10 additional seating tables

  • 40 additional seats

  • 6 additional seats at the fire pit

  • ~50 people can use standing tables along perimeter

To scale top down view of model

Rotating Games

  • XL Connect 4, Jenga, Shuffle Board

Permanent Games

  • Corn hole, Hook and Ring Toss

Materials…
Sc’additions would use patterns, textures, and colors drawn from Ohio State’s current brand language. It would use a synthetic turf that would not have the black plastic beads like athletic turf would have, and can be easily cleaned using a leaf blower, or water and vinegar for tougher spots.

A faux fire pit would act as the centerpiece for the outdoor patio. The would be achieved by a fan pushing up thin plastic sheets attached to a mesh. Warm LED lights would be used to light up the plastic and replicate flames
