Sensory Stitch

This semester long partner project involving researching, developing, and selling a project at the annual “Winter Market” event held at Ohio State University.

This market focuses on sustainably hand-crafted goods created by 3rd year industrial design students to raise money to support professional outreach.

Research

Originally, we received a research packet from another team which established a direction with two design research insights.

Using these insights, my partner and I ideated with hundreds of post-its and lots of sketches.

By using our classmates to write short form sticky note ideas based on our nudges, we were able to combine sticky notes into tangible solutions, therefore generating 20+ concepts quickly.

Plants on Cans on Strings

This collection of images showcases the journey from 2 randomly selected sticky notes, to an idea, to first levels of refinement.

These ideas were narrowed down into 2 distinct concepts.

The image on the left shows my focus on iterating through sketching while the image on the right showcases my partner’s skill in digital sketch rendering.

The next step was to create a proof of concept. I created this prototype in under 20 minutes!

Storyboarding and market analysis

The following images showcase my work towards showing how a user would interact with it at home and during the Winter Market, and an analysis comparing similar items on the market in order to find where our product should lay. I also used the marketing words found on these websites to establish a “vibe” that we wanted to lean towards.

By viewing the photos provided to us by the research team, I identified 57 variations of plants that were growing around porches in the neighborhood around Ohio State. These served as inspiration for what plants to include in the pot.

We attempted making a pot out of sawdust from the wood shop and glue, however it never fully dried and was not something we continued exploring due to time constraints.

Come back soon to see where we went from here! (Last updated, 8/27/25)
